UT Southern, formerly named Martin Methodist College, is the fourth undergraduate campus in the UT System. It is the only public, four-year institution of higher education between Chattanooga and Memphis along Tennessee’s southern border.

Founded in 1870 as Martin College and later renamed Martin Methodist College (MMC).

As the state’s land grant university, the University of Tennessee System exists to serve the people of Tennessee. We believe the partnership with MMC and the new UT Southern will make a major impact in an underserved part of the state, providing access to quality affordable higher education.
In addition to being part of the statewide University of Tennessee System, UT Southern employees will have access to better, cost-efficient benefits. Students will have access to new graduate programs and lower tuition costs. The administration will have access to more resources for operations, marketing and recruitment.
Adding UT Southern to the University of Tennessee System will create higher-education opportunities in the region in critical areas such as nursing, education and business. These programs will be vital to the long-term economic success of southern Middle Tennessee and allow us to keep some of the region’s brightest students in the area for their education.
A primary mission for the University of Tennessee is to provide affordable education for Tennesseans. By joining the University of Tennessee System, UT Southern students will see a 60 percent reduction in tuition costs – from $26,000 last year to $10,200 for the upcoming school year.
UT Southern has the potential to be a huge catalyst for economic growth in the Pulaski area. As the university rises in its capacity to serve the region, it is our hope that the entire region will benefit.
The UT System Office of Communications and Marketing conducted community focus groups to gauge perceptions of several possible campus names. UT Southern was chosen because it represented the broader region.
We anticipate that athletics will remain affiliated with the NAIA, but would have an opportunity in the future to change its affiliation.
The UT System Office of Communications and Marketing conducted a community wide survey to gauge affinity to MMC’s team name, marks and colors. From those survey results, we saw an opportunity to create a fresh identity that paid respect to the Redhawks and the traditional red color.
