The University of Tennessee Alliance of Women Philanthropists honored Brenda Speer as the 2026 recipient of the Brenda G. Lawson Legacy of Leadership Award during its annual Women and Philanthropy Symposium on April 17.
Established in 1998, the Alliance of Women Philanthropists empowers women to lead through philanthropy and celebrates their impact across the University of Tennessee. The Legacy of Leadership Award is among its highest honors, recognizing women whose generosity, service and vision create lasting change.
A Giles County native and University of Tennessee alumna, Speer was the first in her family to graduate from college and has dedicated her life to expanding opportunity for others. She played a key role in the merger of Martin Methodist College into the University of Tennessee Southern, strengthening access to higher education across Middle Tennessee.
Through her philanthropy, mentorship and advocacy, Speer continues to inspire others to invest in their communities and lead with purpose. Her impact is also reflected in the “Everywhere You Look, UT” mural at Speerit Hill Farm, a symbol of Volunteer pride and possibility.
“Brenda Speer’s leadership and generosity exemplify the spirit of this award,” said Rita Silen, chair of the Alliance of Women Philanthropists executive board. “Her impact will be felt for generations to come.”
